Hulu has officially picked up Mid-Century Modern, a new multi-camera comedy series from Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, alongside prolific producer Ryan Murphy. The series, produced by 20th Television, marks a swift transition from pilot to series order, just two months after the initial pilot was greenlit.

Mid-Century Modern features an ensemble cast led by Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer, both of whom will also serve as executive producers. They are joined by Nathan Lee Graham and Linda Lavin in key roles.

What’s the Premise?

The comedy follows three best friends—gay men of a certain age—who, after an unexpected death, decide to live out their golden years together in Palm Springs. The wealthiest among them, Bunny Schneiderman (played by Lane), resides with his mother. The group, acting as a chosen family, navigates the ups and downs of life while reminding each other that there’s always room for improvement, even if it’s just getting a little work done.

Lane’s character, Bunny, is a successful businessman on the brink of retirement who is constantly seeking love but struggles to believe he’s deserving of it. Bomer plays Jerry Frank, a former Mormon who left his church and marriage in his early 20s after his wife outed him to their congregation. Now, Jerry is a gentle soul—pure of heart, but not particularly bright. Graham portrays Arthur, an elegant fashion industry veteran who laments that life never quite lives up to the stylish ideal he envisions. Lavin stars as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s wise yet overbearing mother whose caring nature sometimes crosses into smothering and amoral territory.

Mid-Century Modern marks the first series for Mutchnick and Kohan since the end of their Emmy-winning show Will & Grace in 2020. The duo previously developed the CBS pilot Wilde Things during the 2020-21 season.

In addition to Mid-Century Modern, Murphy also revealed new details about his upcoming FX series Grotesquerie on Tuesday, signaling a busy period ahead for the acclaimed producer.
