As an actor, he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar and the National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Kanchivaram, a Tamil film directed by Priyadarshan.

Prakash Raj’s personal life reflects his multicultural background. He was born to a Tuluva father and a Kannada mother. His brother, Prasad Raj, is also an actor. Prakash completed his schooling at St. Joseph’s Indian High School and attended St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bangalore. Actress Geetha introduced him to prominent Tamil film director K. Balachander, who advised him to change his surname from ‘Rai’ to ‘Raj.’ Despite this, he is still called Prakash Rai in his home state of Karnataka.
Prakash Raj has been married twice: first to actress Lalitha Kumari, with whom he has two daughters and a son, and later to choreographer Pony Verma, with whom he has a son named Vedhanth1. His father is Hindu, and his mother is Roman Catholic, but he identifies himself as a non-believer.
