WWE superstar John Cena is eyed to star in the live-action ‘Matchbox,’ the forthcoming film where Apple Original Films, Skydance, and Mattel Films are joining hands. The movie will be directed by Sam Hargrave, who worked on the ‘Extraction’ films.
The script, by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper, will be developed around the nostalgia of die-cast toy automobiles. Generations would associate themselves with the same since their creation by an automobile aficionado named Jack Odell in 1953. Matchbox, acquired by Mattel in 1997, has managed to retain its authenticity and has sold two cars every second in the world.
Production Team:
- Producers: David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger of Skydance, and Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films.
- Director: Sam Hargrave
- Writers: David Coggeshall, Jonathan Tropper
Among his long list of credits is his recent lead role in the action comedy ‘Jackpot’ on Amazon MGM Studios and Peter Farrelly’s comedy ‘Ricky Stanicky’. The actor is also due to feature in the Max series ‘Peacemaker’ and will embark on WWE tour as part of his final year for WWE in 2025.
The movie is just another precious collaboration between Skydance and Apple, alongside the titles like ‘The Gorge’ or ‘Fountain of Youth’. With Cena’s star power and Hargrave’s experience as a director, ‘Matchbox’ is going to be an exciting addition in the world of live-action adaptations.
