Notably, Kiran Rao’s film “Laapataa Ladies” has been chosen as India’s official entry into the Best International Feature Film category in the 97th Academy Awards. The Film Federation of India made the announcement on Monday and it is proud news for the filmmakers and the Indian film industry.
Lighthearted satire of patriarchy- Directed by Kiran Rao and presented by Aamir Khan Productions in association with Jio Studios. “Laapataa Ladies” is a comedy-drama that revolves around the life of two young newlywed brides who were exchanged during a journey to her husbands’ homes while on a train.
Complicated Competition
Among 29 films in the fray, some key contenders included Ranbir Kapoor’s “Animal,” Kartik Aaryan’s “Chandu Champion,” Prabhas’s “Kalki 2898 AD,” and National Award-winning Malayalam film “Aattam.” The jury has finally decided to choose “Laapataa Ladies” after going through the careful scrutiny of all films that they had supposed to watch.
Thanks – Director
Euphoric, Kiran Rao said, “I am utterly honored and thrilled that our film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. It is a testimonial to the hard work of all my team members whose rigorous efforts and passion brought this tale to life. Not to forget, it would have been futile without the constant support from Aamir Khan Productions and Jio Studios.
A Step Ahead for Indian Cinema
The international selection of “Laapataa Ladies” has also been considered a step ahead for Indian cinema. Set to a very special narrative and with strong performances by the lead characters Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, and Nitanshi Goel, this film waits for its critical appreciation and hopefully international appreciation as well.
Looking Ahead
As “Laapataa Ladies” makes it to the Oscars, hope and gleam over at the Indian film industry and the cinema viewer across the country. That the film has been selected comes after India’s distinguished year at the Oscars, with “Naatu Naatu” from SS Rajamouli’s “RRR” taking home Best Original Song and “The Elephant Whisperers” emerging as the Best Documentary (Short) recipient at the 95th Academy Awards.
