The inimitable jodi of director Radha Mohan and Yogi Babu brings in a visceral web series, ‘Chutney Sambar’, that has set the wave since its release on Disney+ Hotstar. This is a six-episode series, running between 35 to 45 minutes each, and is a heartwarming probe into family bonding and personal acceptance, packaged in a rather comic way.
Chutney Sambar Plot Overview
The story is centered around Rathnasamy, an ailing restaurateur who tells his son Karthi on his deathbed what he has been hiding all along. Rathnasamy confesses to having had a relationship before his marriage and tells that he has a son named Sachu, whose roadside eatery at the pattalam highway was famous for chutney. Karthi sets out to find Sachu and fulfill his dying father’s wish, and in the process, a streak of events draws the estranged brothers closer.
Chutney Sambar Web Series Performance
Yogi Babu did well in his role as Sachu, effortlessly blending his comic timing with the emotions. It’s because of his acting that he forms the backbone of this entire series, proving he can do much more than these comical roles. The supporting cast to the lead, Vani Bhojan, Chandran, Elango Kumaravel, Myna Nandhini, and Nithin Sathya add significant value to the plot, weaving their characters into reality.
Radha Mohan, who has given these feel-good films like ‘Mozhi’ and ‘Abhiyum Naanum,’ returns to his comfort zone with ‘Chutney Sambar.’ It proves his mettle through stories that evoke a response at an emotional level while keeping the audiences entertained. The writing is crisp, the characters develop well, and the plot does not drag at any point till its end.
Strengths and Weaknesses
One of the series’ strong points is in the exploration of interpersonal relationships and just where family bonds bring strength. The humour does sometimes clash with the emotional undertone, but then that forms a unique flavor in the narrative, much like the titular chutney and sambar. Not everything with this series works though—some backstories are just plain tedious, and a few of the jokes feel like they did not quite hit their marks. Moreover, some of the subplots are unneeded, and they tend to add little meaning to the main story.
Chutney Sambar Review Conclusion
‘Chutney Sambar’ is a refreshing departure from the regular violent action dramas that inundate the streaming platforms; it offers a blend of humor and heart that makes it a worthwhile watch for those who enjoy family-centric narratives with a dash of comedy. The series is, though with minor flaws, outstanding in its sincerity and easy performances by all, particularly Yogi Babu.
If you are in the mood for a web series that can make you laugh and also tug at your heartstrings a little, then ‘Chutney Sambar’ has to be on the watch list.
